In 1952 the nation saw the coronation of Queen Elisabeth II and national pride captured the British Isles. Children in schools danced around the maypole on May Day, singing traditional songs and learning about the history, geography, and the flora and fauna of Britain and the Commonwealth.
Technological progress transformed the cultural and behavioural trends around us. In turn, humanity was bestowed with the task of finding ways to deal with ever-rising demands and issues surrounding a consumer driven society. The economic consequences of the recent pandemic as well as the Climate Emergency are but two examples of the need for current and future generations to be able to problem-solve, create, and innovate to the best of their ability. It’s the pioneers, the innovators and the future thinkers that will change our world. And it starts with education.
Magway Engineering Club
At Magway we care about future generations and continuously strive to change the world for the better, one step at a time. Our smart, sustainable, zero-emissions, goods moving solution will secure the supply chain resilience and make roads safer and cleaner. However, to achieve long term sustainability, we need to ensure that future generations learn about engineering and its importance now. As chartered engineers, we are committed to teaching others and what better way to share the knowledge and inspire young people to develop a passion for engineering, than to team up with a primary school!
Our engineers Aanchal Mittal, Josh Clark and Matt Bacarese-Hamilton have been running Magway Engineering Club programme in a primary school in Wembley, just down the road from Magway’s test facility. The Club runs as a 6 week long after school activity and is open to pupils from years 5 and 6 for one hour, once a week.
The club aims to encourage local children from a diverse range of backgrounds to take an interest in engineering. The course explores a range of disciplines including mechanical and electrical engineering, design and manufacture, programming as well as topics such as basic microcontroller programming, motors, sensors, motion, and structures.
This project came to fruition as a result of Magway’s collaboration with the D&T Association’s Blueprint 1000 initiative, which builds relationships between companies and schools, locally and nationally.
Education has come a long way since the 1950s but there is always room for improvement. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We need to prepare children for the jobs that don’t yet exist and empower them to navigate the ever-changing world we live in.
In the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Magway feels patriotic and proud of our legacy in making – planting the seeds of passion for STEM and engineering among the youngest in our society, so they can solve problems to secure a smarter and brighter future for Britain and the world.
